Alan David Ferguson

Mr. Alan David Ferguson Mr. Alan Ferguson, 89, died at home peacefully March 23, 2008. Mr. Ferguson was born November 5, 1918, raised in Montclair, New Jersey and was married for 61 years to Victoria Milliken Ferguson, also of Montclair, who died in 2001. He resided the past ten years at Wesley Woods of Newnan-Peachtree City after a full retirement with Vicky in Vero Beach, Fl. Alan graduated from Princeton University in Princeton, N.J., in 1940, majoring in English. Throughout his life and career, Alan was always first a poet, continuing to write for his childhood sweetheart and lifelong love Vicky well into his later years. While in graduate school at Princeton, Alan interrupted his post-graduate work to enlist in the Navy during World War II, serving as a First Lieutenant and flight instructor. After the service, Alan began a career in retailing that spanned from the 1940’s until his retirement in 1986. He started his retailing career at Macy’s New York, followed at Leonard’s in Fort Worth, TX, and then came to Atlanta in 1955, joining Rich’s Department Store. While with Rich’s he opened the first Rich’s branch store, Rich’s Lenox Square, serving as General Manager. He later launched Richway while with Rich’s, which was later acquired by Dayton Hudson, now Target Corporation. He was a past President of the Buckhead Rotary Club, was awarded the Silver Beaver Service Award by the Boy Scouts of America, and was one of the founding members of the Atlanta Classic Foundation, creating the Atlanta Classic golf tournament, today known as the AT&T Classic. He was a member of Cherokee Town and Country Club, and was a founding member of the Atlanta Country Club. After leaving Rich’s, he later was brought to Fred Meyer Department Stores in Portland, Oregon, where he retired as Executive Vice President of Soft Goods. Well into retirement he continued as an avid golfer, and was a member of Vero Beach Golf Club and a founding member of Hawk’s Nest Golf Club in Vero Beach, FL. He was a member of Newnan Presbyterian Church in Newnan, GA. Funeral Services will be held at Newnan Presbyterian Church 2 p.m. Saturday, March 29th with Rev. Harry Barrow officiating. He is survived by; daughters, Dale Ferguson of Atlanta, Martha Ball and husband Dennis of Palmetto, Ga., and son Cleve Ferguson of Duluth, Ga.; grandchildren, Peter Braunecker of Portland, Oregon and David and Laura Braunecker and great-grandson, Owen Braunecker of Alpharetta, Ga., granddaughter, Elizabeth Greene Cirone and her husband Ryan Cirone of Warner Robbins, and brother Dr. and Mrs. R.C. Ferguson of Upper Montclair, New Jersey.
