Alice Upshaw Burgess

Alice Upshaw Burgess, 83, passed away at her home in Moreland on Friday, March 15, 2024 surrounded by her family and friends. She was born in Newnan, Georgia on April 22, 1940 to the late Eugene and Claudis Upshaw, Sr. of Newnan. Alice spent most of her time in Coweta County; however, she lived and worked in Atlanta for a short time before she returned to Newnan and moved to the Moreland Community. After she graduated in 1958 from Newnan High School, she attended Massey Business School. On December 31, 1959, Alice married the love of her life, the late Billy J. Burgess, whom she met at the skating rink in LaGrange, GA. They were married for 54 years. Alice loved helping others and shared her beautiful smile and kind, encouraging words with everyone. She worked at Newnan High School as Registrar/Secretary and retired from Coweta County School System after 29 years to care for her ailing father. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Moreland for 59 years. As a faithful servant of Christ, she shared her faith with others and served in numerous roles which include: Teacher/Volunteer of Vacation Bible School/Awanas/Sunday School, Women on Missions Secretary, Hostess Committee Member, Ladies Softball Team Member, Choir Member, and Church Secretary. She served her community at the famous Moreland Community July 4th Barbecue for many years, which was co-sponsored by the church. She loved music, and played the piano and sang with a quartet during her younger years. She also taught her grandchildren Christian songs which they sing to their children today. She utilized her excellent computer skills at her church where she prepared the Weekly Church Bulletin and flyers. Also, she enjoyed making cards for her family and friends with pictures from cherished memories. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and loved spending time with her family on numerous vacations, get togethers and celebrations. She was preceded in death by her husband Billy J. Burgess, parents Eugene and Claudis Upshaw, Sr., brother Joel (Connie) Upshaw and sister Rose McMichael. Survivors include her three children, Jeff and (Robin) Burgess, (Jack) and Terri Lassetter, Greg and (Bonnie) Burgess; five grandchildren, Nicholas and (Kara) Burgess, (Andrew) and Lindsey Collins, (Andrew) and Hilary Duke, (Wesley) and Kelly Whisenhunt, Kacey Smith; ten great-grandchildren, Holland Burgess, Amelia Burgess, Brylee Collins, Aspen Collins, Sadie James Collins, Owen Andrew Duke, Oaklynn Alys Duke, Stella Whisenhunt, Crosby Whisenhunt and Bowie Smith; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews; and her longtime companion Mr. Charles Davis. On Friday, March 22, 2024, visitation will be held from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m., and memorial service to follow at 4:00 p.m. at McKoon Funeral Home, 38 Jackson Street in Newnan. Pastor Dr. Daniel Ausbun and Pastor Todd Slade will be officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery, 96 Jefferson Street, Newnan.
