Barbara Sprayberry Hawk Thompson

Barbara Sprayberry Hawk Thompson died on July 3, 2026, at age 93. She was born in Newnan, GA on September 11, 1932, and grew up in the Arnco Mill village. She was the eldest daughter of N.D. and Gladys Bridges Sprayberry and had one sister, Mavis Sprayberry Trice. She attended Coweta County Schools and graduated from Newnan High School in 1950. After high school, she began working at Arnco Mills/Bibb Manufacturing in June 1950. She was a billing clerk and assisted with payroll. Barbara met her first husband, William Talmadge Hawk, on a blind date. He was also born and reared in Newnan, GA. They married on April 7, 1963 at Andrews Chapel United Methodist Church, which was Barbara's home church. In February 1968, she began working in the family business, Hawk's Supermarket. She did a little bit of everything. On February 20, 1966, Barbara gave birth to her daughter, Debra Ann Hawk Gourley. Barbara's first husband preceded her in death on August 5, 1979, and suddenly Barbara was a single mom. After Hawk's Supermarket closed, she worked for Dr. Samuel E. Forbis, Jr., running his business office - New Radiology Associates, P.A. - from October 1979 to December 1991. Afterward, for a few more years, she worked part-time for Lee Goodrum Pharmacy. In 1985, she found love again and married William R. (Tommy) Thompson and her family expanded to include Sam and Deb Thompson, and Cass Gunn and her children, Ashley Gunn Norvick and Bill Gunn. Barbara and Tommy were blessed with over 25 years of marriage until Tommy's death on April 22, 2011. On June 29, 2006, another grandchild joined the family with the arrival of Elizabeth Gourley, daughter of Debra and Bruce Gourley After being widowed again, Barbara never remarried, but she enjoyed a special friendship with a kind gentleman, Jim Dollar of Newnan. Barbara was a member of Newnan First United Methodist Church and was involved in many areas of service over the years until she became unable to continue. Barbara is survived by her children, Debra (Bruce) Gourley, Cass Gunn, and Samuel (Deb) Thompson and one sister, Mavis Trice. She is also survived by grandchildren, Ashley Norvick, Bill Gunn and Elizabeth Gourley. She is also survived by 1 nephew, Matt (Shannon) Trice. Barbara had many special cousins over the years including both first cousins and second cousins. One cousin, Jura Mae Rainey, continued to visit Barbara until her last days. We are grateful for the love and friendship Jura Mae gave us all. The family is grateful to all the staff at Wesley Woods of Newnan and Brightmoor Hospice for the care they gave Barbara during the last years of her life. A short graveside service will be held on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at 11:00 AM in Oak Hill Cemetery. On Saturday, July 25, 2026, at 2:00 PM, a memorial service will be held at the chapel of McKoon Funeral Home so that more family and friends can attend. The service will be a celebration of Barbara's life. All are invited to either or both services and are invited to wear Barbara's favorite color, pink.
