Franklin "Doug" Riner

Franklin "Doug" Riner, age 83, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours on Thursday, June 18, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Doug was born on December 4, 1942, in Sheffield, Alabama, to the late Julius Clifford Riner and Myrtie Carpenter Riner. He graduated from Phil Campbell High School in 1962 and went on to serve his country for four years in the Army National Guard. While serving, he attended the Decatur Trade School in Decatur, Alabama. His talent quickly caught the attention of Lockheed Martin in Marietta, Georgia, which recruited Doug and several classmates. He dedicated 42 proud years of service to Lockheed Martin before his well-deserved retirement. While attending church, Doug met the absolute love of his life, Janice Smith. After dating for four years, they married and moved to Georgia to build their beautiful life and family together. Doug was an avid exercise and outdoor enthusiast. He began his fitness journey running six miles a day, later transitioning to biking, trout fishing, camping, and hiking, even conquering sections of the Appalachian Trail. Quick-witted and gifted with a delightfully dry sense of humor, Doug brought immense joy to everyone around him. Above all, he fiercely loved his family-and anyone who knew Doug knew his number one passion was Alabama Football. He will be deeply missed this upcoming season as his beloved Crimson Tide takes the field. [1]Roll Tide!! Along with his parents, Doug was preceded in death by his brother, Phillip Riner, and his sister, Betty Streetman. He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Janice Smith Riner; his daughter, Selena Sweatman and her husband Wade; his son, Charley Riner; his grandchildren, Lindsay Woodward (Andy), Cori Little (Caleb), Aaron Sweatman (Rachel), and Taylor Anne Riner; and his precious great-grandchildren, Harris, Nolan, Henry, Ava, and Isla Woodward, and Halleigh and Jack Little. And also his brothers, Kenneth Riner and Lloyd Riner and his sister in laws Linda Riner and Marjorie Smith. The funeral service celebrating Doug's life will be held Saturday, June 20, 2026, at 2:00 PM in the chapel of McKoon Funeral Home, 38 Jackson Street, in Newnan, Georgia, with Elder David Carnley officiating. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 12:00 PM until the service time at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Newnan.
