Hampton G. Burnham

There are those people we encounter in life, who will naturally shine brightest in the spotlight. There are more, however, who find their greatest satisfaction away from that glare, and are most comfortable in being a strong, dependable force in the life of their family and close friends. Such was Hampton Gerald Burnham. “Hamp” as he was known to all, was born of simple, hardworking parents, Gordon and Rada Shinn Burnham. The close-knit village of Sargent welcomed his birth on October 29, 1929. He started school at the old Sargent School at 7 years old and later graduated from Western High School. Hamp knew the value of hard work and after high school, was first employed at the Sargent Cotton Mill. As new opportunities presented themselves, he took advantage of a job at the new Playtex Manufacturing Co. in Newnan where he would work for the next 36 years as an engineer. His desire to make his community a better place put him in positions as a coach for Little League baseball and softball teams in Newnan and the Sargent communities. He was a dependable member of the Coweta County Volunteer Fire Department. Always an even-tempered man, glimpses of his more animated side could easily be stirred by whatever circumstances the Atlanta Braves found themselves! The good, long, earthly life of Hamp Burnham came to an end in the comfort and familiar surroundings of his home and family on December 1st. In addition to his parents, Hamp was predeceased by his siblings Willard, Joe, Elmer “Butch”, and Harold Burnham. His siters were Margaret Garmany and Frances May. Hamp was a loving husband to his wife of almost 69 years, Katherine Estep Burnham. He was an exemplary father to his sons Douglas (and Tammy) Burnham, Donald (and Sheila) Burnham. He found great love for his grandchildren April (Dale) Roth, Katie (Jamey) Keith, Melissa (Nick) Henson, Ana (Andy) Edge, Amber (Evin) Rhodes, Adam Burnham, and Nelson Turney. There are 16 great grandchildren. Hamp’s life will be remembered and celebrated at a graveside service to be held on Thursday, December 3, 2020 at 3:00 PM at Forest Lawn Memorial Park led by Pastor Brian Self. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Bill Prescott, Jeff Estep, Allen Smith, Victor Griffin, Keith Miller, Rodney Riggs, Jason Estep and Scott Garmany.
