Helen Mary Pitman

Helen Mary Pagel Pitman, age 96, passed away peacefully at her Newnan home on May 5th, 2017. Born in Des Moines, Iowa November 17, 1920, Helen was the daughter of the late Major Lewis F. Pagel and Mary Clancy Pagel. Preceding her in death were her parents, her beloved husband Eddie H. Pitman and son-in-law John McAfee. Helen graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Atlanta. She played the piano and was an accomplished organist playing for several churches as a teenager in the Capitol View neighborhood in southwest Atlanta. She and Eddie married in 1937 and celebrated 71 years together. She was a wife, homemaker, and mother extraordinaire and served the community as President of the West Manor Elementary and the Southwest High School PTA organizations in Atlanta. In Newnan, she was a member of Central Baptist Church for 47 years and served as President and a 5000+ hour volunteer for the Newnan Hospital Pink Lady Auxiliary. A very humble person by nature, she did take pride in her work with the hospital auxiliary. In retirement, she and Eddie enjoyed traveling throughout the world, but their happiest times were spent with children and grandchildren celebrating life at their family home in the woods, Sunny Pines, near what is now the bustling area of Thomas Crossroads. The wonderfully full and productive life of their mother will be remembered by her children Eddie L (and Marybeth) Pitman, Carole Pitman McAfee, and Robert C. (and Chehalis) Pitman. She delighted in being grandmother to Tyler (and Liliana) Pitman, Amy Pitman (and Paul) Boillot, Molly (and Griggs) Powell, Jay (and Amy) McAfee, Jeff (and Deborah) McAfee, James McAfee, Haley (and Chad) Tollison. Additionally, there are 14 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Helen is also survived by her loyal caregivers whom she loved as family, Jada Burston and Brenda Smith. Funeral arrangements are by McKoon Funeral Home at 38 Jackson Street. The family will welcome family and friends on Monday, May 8th beginning at 9:30 AM at the funeral Home. Her life will be fondly recalled and honored at a graveside service to be held at 11:00 AM in the historic Sharpsburg Cemetery on Highway 154 to be led by her pastor Dr. Winford Hendrix of Central Baptist Church. Serving as pallbearers will be Tyler Pitman, Griggs Pitman, David Pitman, Jay McAfee, Jeff McAfee, James McAfee.
