James Nix Aldridge

James Nix Aldridge, age 86, died peacefully November 20, 2011 at Southwest Christian Care in Union City. He was born March 19, 1925 in Carroll County Georgia and was the last surviving son of the late William "Jeff" and Mary Dura Nix Aldridge. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Alan D. Aldridge; sisters, Faye Clark, Thelma Root, Elizabeth Cottrell and Dura Dyer. Also preceding him in death are his brothers Charlie Aldridge, Frank Aldridge, William "Buck" Aldridge, Claude Henry Aldridge, Bobby Aldridge and infant Homer Mac Aldridge. James served in the Marine Corps during World War II and participated in the Marianas Islands Operation. Following the war, he moved to Newnan to make his home with his wife of 66 years, Virginia Daniel Aldridge. He became associated with Coweta Fayette EMC in 1947, just four months after it began operation. His career began as an apprentice lineman and he retired 42 years later serving as Assistant to the Manager, and in that capacity he was responsible for overseeing construction, line maintenance and the operations departments. Faith and family were the bedrock of James’ life. He and Virginia were charter members of Newnan First Christian Church which was formed in 1951. He served as church treasurer, chairman of the board, Sunday School teacher and Elder for many years.He also served as President of the Gideon Camp and as a Trustees of Christian City. In 1998, he and Virginia moved to Union City and lived at Christian Village. During these active years, he served as Chaplain, Bible teacher and a volunteer at Christian City until 2009. He was an assistant Sunday school teacher at Southwest Christian Church in East Point for 10 years. While living in Newnan, he was active with the work of the Newnan Optimist Club having served twice as President and also Lt. Governor of the District. James is survived by his wife, Virginia Daniel Aldridge of Christian City; son, Gary Aldridge and his wife Kara of Carrollton, daughter-in-law, Deborah Aldridge of Gulf Shores, AL, son, Mark Aldridge and his wife Jean of Aloha, Oregon. Also surviving are his grandchildren Alan Aldridge and his wife Kathleen of Norfolk, VA, Ashley Weyer and her husband Adam of Due West, SC. There are 11 great grandchildren and an extended family of nieces and nephews. Also surviving are two sisters Mary jeff Harris of Aransas Pass TX and Ruth J. Hewett of Rome, GA. Funeral arrangements are by McKoon Funeral Home at 38 Jackson Street in Newnan where the family visitation will be on Tuesday evening at McKoon Funeral Home between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM and also beginning at 12 noon Wednesday with the funeral service following at 2:00 PM in the McKoon Funeral Home chapel with Pastor Lindsey Herndon and Pastor Tony Sullivan officiating. Interment will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Serving as pallbearers will be Travis Newman, Gene Dyer, Ray Barron, Larry Gresham, Matthew Porter and Adam Weyer.
