James Robert "Bob" Crawford

June 21, 1936 was an exciting day for Dr. James M. Crawford and his wife Mattie, as they welcomed the birth of a son, James Robert Crawford into their family. As a young man, Bobby, as he came to be known to all, excelled in his youthful endeavors. He was well-known in his hometown as a high school basketball star, a competent debate team member, an excellent student and a mainstay in the dramatic arts. He was proud that his favorite high school teacher was also his teacher at Sunday school. Following high school graduation he attended Armstrong College, where he received a scholarship to play basketball. He later matriculated to and graduated from The University of Georgia and The University of Georgia College of Pharmacy. He returned to his hometown to marry a young lady who was one of his mother’s many piano students, Joan Dempsey. Life continued to present new adventures including becoming a father to two delightful little girls. At Cave Spring Baptist Church he served as a Deacon and Sunday school superintendent. Bob moved his family to Newnan where he worked for Lee-King Drug Company until his retirement. He was a member of Central Baptist Church and was active in The Newnan Optimist Club. His hobbies and interests were diverse. He was an amateur radio operator, a quail hunter, a technology enthusiast, a music lover (especially classical music), a history buff and poetry reader. In sum, a Renaissance man. First and foremost Bob was a loving husband, devoted father and grandfather to his grandchildren who called him “Bobby” the same name with which he began life. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his beloved grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Robert Linton (Florence) Crawford and by his sisters Mrs. June Hughes, Ms. Ann Dittus and brother, Dr. Frank Story; sister-in-law Mrs. Betty (Lyn) Marcus and brothers- in-law Mr. Bobby Heath and Mr. Bradford Snead; aunt Elizabeth Beattie and uncle Bill Crawford. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Joan and his precious daughters and their families, Mr. and Mrs. Meri and Doug Falciglia and their children, Robert and Carolyn and Drs. Susan and Ben Chortkoff and their children, Drew and David; sister Mrs. Marian Snead and brother Mr. Charles Crawford; sisters in-law Mrs. Vicky Heath and Mrs. Reba (Gerald) Lindsey; brother in-law Mr. Thomas (Reatha) Dempsey; and very special aunt Mrs. Louise Beattie. He has many nieces and nephews and each and every one of them are special to him. Funeral arrangements are by McKoon Funeral Home at 38 Jackson Street, Newnan, Georgia where the family will receive friends on Friday, November 20th between 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 21, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Cave Spring Baptist Church, Cave Spring, Georgia. Interment will follow at Cave Spring Cemetery.
