James Harvey Davis

James H. (Jimmy) Davis, age 80, passed away peacefully on May 8, 2020. He was born on September 4, 1939, on the Mill Village at Sargent, Georgia, to the late Jesse Cecil and Grace Beall Davis. He is survived by his wife, Sandra; daughter Sharon Davis Roy and her husband, Dan; grandchildren Matthew and Kendall Roy; and sister-in-law, Elaine Warren. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, Steven James Davis, his sister, Jean Davis Hopson, and brothers-in-law, Billy Hopson, and Billy Warren. He was a member of Sargent Baptist Church. Jimmy graduated from Western High School in 1957 and attended West Georgia College and DeKalb Junior College. He was a member of the Georgia National Guard in Newnan before joining the US Air Force in 1958, serving until 1963. He married his high school sweetheart, Sandra Faver, on June 11, 1960. Their travels while he was in the Air Force took them to Maine, the island of Guam, and New York. Upon his discharge from the Air Force, he accepted a position as License Examiner with the Georgia State Patrol in Athens, Georgia. One of the persons he issued a driver’s license to was Vince Dooley when he came to Athens as head coach of the Georgia Bulldogs. He was soon promoted to Trooper and transferred to Gainesville. Later he became an instructor at the Georgia Police Academy. While there he was afforded the opportunity to attend the FBI Academy at Quantico, Virginia, and graduated as a member of 107th session in 1976. He also served as Supervisor of the Accident Reposting Section at Atlanta Headquarters. He retired as Lieutenant in 1990. Jimmy was a member of the original Coweta County Volunteer Fire Department. He was also very active in his children’s activities and coach his son and daughter in little league sports, coached a church league youth basketball team, and a youth football team through the recreation department. He and his son played on the Sargent Baptist Church softball team while his wife and daughter played on the women’s softball team. He continued to enjoy sports when his grandchildren came along, coaching his grandson in Pony League sports as well as attending many of his grandson’s and granddaughter’s sporting events. At age 75, he participated in his first Peachtree Road Race and completed 5 races before his illness. In 1986, he was elected a Coweta County Commissioner and served a 4-year term. In March 1991, he began serving as a bailiff for the Superior Court of Coweta County and was appointed Chief Bailiff in 1992. He served in that capacity until July 2019. Jimmy was a member of Sylvan Masonic Lodge #429 at Sargent and received his 50th year apron during a ceremony at the Lodge on Family Day in 2018. Jimmy and Sandra enjoyed traveling and they visited many of the attractions of our great country including Yellowstone National Park, Niagara Falls, the Grand Canyon, and the Bad Lands of South Dakota. High on their list, also, was cruising. They enjoyed more than 35 cruises and visited ports such as Alaska, Hawaii, and the Easter, Western, and Southern Caribbean. The graveside service celebrating the life Jimmy lived is Monday, May 11, 2020 at 2:00 PM at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, 656 Roscoe Road, in Newnan with Pastor Brian Self officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made in Jimmy's name to Sargent Baptist Church, P.O. Box 189, Sargent, GA 30275.
