John P. Goodrum, Jr.

John Paul Goodrum, Jr., died on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025, after a brief illness. He was born November 12, 1946, in Savannah, Georgia, to John Paul Goodrum and Josephine Maddox Goodrum. John spent his early years in Savannah, where he developed a love of baseball at a young age. He loved sharing stories about riding his bike to Daffin Park and watching the Savannah Pirates play minor league baseball. His family moved to Macon, Georgia, where he graduated in 1964 from Lanier School for Boys. He then attended Auburn University, was a member of Delta Upsilon fraternity, and graduated in 1970 from the Harrison School of Pharmacy. In 1970, John married Marsha Steverson of Sheffield, Alabama. They moved to Newnan, where John worked for Lee-King Drug Company. Over the next few years, he also worked as Head Pharmacist at Coweta General Hospital. In 1982, he and his partner, Bobby Lee, opened Lee-Goodrum Pharmacy. John operated Lee-Goodrum Pharmacy until his retirement in 2020. He absolutely loved his customers and employees, many of whom were like family to him. In 1980, John was elected to the Newnan City Council, where he served until 2006, as both a Council member and as Mayor Pro-Tempore. During this time, he witnessed significant growth in the city of Newnan. He remained focused on his desire for 'smart growth' to ensure the continued charm of his historical town. In keeping with his service to the community, John was also involved with numerous other civic organizations. He served on the Board of Directors of BB&T, the Newnan Country Club, the Newnan Convention Authority, the Newnan Hospital Authority, and others. John was also a proud member of First United Methodist Church, his church home for over 55 years, where he served in many leadership roles. John absolutely loved Auburn University. "If you love Auburn, Auburn loves you back" was his motto. On most fall Saturdays, you could find him in his favorite seats in Jordan Hare Stadium. He equally loved spending time at Plainsman Park for Auburn baseball and Neville Arena watching Auburn basketball. As the grandchildren grew older, nothing pleased him more than taking them to an Auburn sporting event and sharing a lemonade with them at Toomer's Drugstore. John loved his alma mater and proudly served as a member of the Samford Society and the Apothecary Society of the Harrison School of Pharmacy. John lived the Auburn Creed which emphasized hard work, education, honesty, compassion, patriotism, and faith. As his family grew, his grandchildren became his pride and joy. Nothing made him happier than spending a beautiful summer afternoon on Lake Martin on his boat with his grandchildren. Known as G'Daddy, golf cart rides, ice cream treats, and feeding the turtles made his days on Lake Martin extra special. John loved to travel. He and Marsha were fortunate enough to travel extensively on wonderful trips, making many memories with dear friends. John is survived by his wife of 55 years, Marsha; children Elizabeth (Michael) Terrell of Newnan; Anne Miller Smith (Doug) of Atlanta, GA; and John Paul Goodrum III (Laura) of Houston, TX; his sister, Pam Evans (Barry) of Brentwood, TN; grandchildren Jack Terrell, Corinne Terrell, Will Smith, Mary Louise Smith, Johnny Goodrum, George Goodrum, Eleanor Smith, James Goodrum, and Michael Goodrum. The memorial service will be held Friday, April 25, 2025, at 1 pm at Newnan First United Methodist Church, 33 Greenville Street, Newnan, Georgia, 30263. Memorials may be made in John's memory to Newnan First United Methodist Church (33 Greenville Street, Newnan, GA, 30263) or to Auburn University Foundation (HCOP Advancement, 2316 Walker Building, Auburn, AL 36849).
