Johnnie Schulman

Johnnie Hayes Schulman, 82, passed away peacefully at Newnan Hospital Thursday night October 19, 2017, surrounded by her loving family. She had an inspiring attitude throughout her long battle with multiple illnesses, and no matter how she was feeling, always greeted everyone with her beautiful smile. Johnnie was born in Jennings, Louisiana, the third daughter to Ralph Louin Hayes and Eva (nee Sonnier) Hayes. Johnnie had four sisters and two brothers. She grew up on a farm surrounded by a large extended family, a lot of laughter, good food, music, dancing, and love. Johnnie learned early on how to work hard and appreciate the things in life that can’t be bought or sold. After Johnnie graduated from Welsh High School, she left home to attend Centenary College in Shreveport, Louisiana where she earned a B.S. in Physical Education. There, Johnnie met many lifelong friends and the love of her life, Bob Schulman. Bob and Johnnie got married on August 6, 1960 and were together for 57 years. Johnnie was an educator in Caddo and Bossier parishes for 35 years, teaching physical education and special education. She had boundless energy as a homemaker, gardener, tennis player, wife and mother. Johnnie approached life with a great sense of humor and a rare sense of determination. She was an active member of Noel Memorial United Methodist Church in Shreveport, Louisiana where she donated her time at the Food Pantry and loved her brother and sister members of the Upper Room Sunday School class In 1965, Johnnie and Bob adopted their daughter, Kimberly Anne from the Methodist Children’s Home in New Orleans, and in 1967, a son, Troy Hayes. Johnnie was a fierce mother who, by her actions and words, showed her children the meaning of unconditional love. Johnnie has been reunited in heaven with her parents, her sister Donna Hebert and her brother, Douglas Louin Hayes. Johnnie is survived by her devoted husband, Bob Schulman, her two children and their families: daughter Kim Tiernan and husband John Tiernan of Newnan, Georgia; son Troy Hayes Schulman and wife Robanne of Atlanta Georgia; and five grandchildren John Patrick Tiernan, James Edward Tiernan, Anne Morgan Tiernan, Eva Kennedy Schulman, and Easton Rose Schulman. She is also survived by three sisters: Geneva and husband Ike Hebert, Mary Lu Epperly, Anne and husband Waylon Marcantel, and one brother, Pratt Hayes and wife Terry, and brother-in-law Leroy Hebert, and many dear nieces and nephews.
