Josephine Carmela Thomas

Josephine Carmela Thomas was born in Latisana, Italy April 12, 1926 to the late Maria and Antonio Sbrugnera. She went home to be with her Lord October 5th 2022. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred W. Thomas. They were married 57 years. Her sister, Clara Budin, preceded her in death in 2018. After completing her education degree, she met her future husband, Fred W. Thomas, an American Army soldier stationed in Capriva, Italy. They were later married in Gorizia, Italy on April 9, 1946. Upon his discharge, they settled in Newnan, Georgia. She was well known for her skills in needlework, cooking, artwork and gardening. She shared her gift in needlework with the community through Carmela's Needlework Shop. Her professional eye for design led to her creating many one of a kind works of art. Her love of cooking and Italian cuisine was enjoyed by family and friends. Having vast sewing experience allowed her to be a dressmaker who could copy a dress without needing a pattern. She was one of the founding members of St. George Catholic Church. She was named St. George Woman of the year by the Archbishop of Atlanta at Christ the King Church. Her faith and her family were of upmost importance in her life. She was truly blessed with two beautiful daughters and to have seen the birth of her only grandson and her three great grandchildren. She is survived by her children, Linda (Bob) Cooke and Rita (Rick) Melville, grandson, Jonathan (Elizabeth) Melville, great grandchildren, Nora Katherine Melville, Wesley Frederick Melville and Quinn Carmela Melville. Our entire family wishes to express our sincere thanks to all the staff in Assisted Living at Wesley Woods, for their love and care to Josephine. They have been family to her. Visitation will be Thursday October 13, 2022, at McKoon Funeral Home from 5 PM to 7 PM, preceded by the Rosary in the chapel of McKoon Funeral Home from 4:30 to 5 PM. The funeral Mass will be at St. George Catholic Church, 771 Roscoe Road, Newnan, Georgia at 10:30 AM on Friday, October 14, 2022. Friends and family are invited to a Celebration of Life meal immediately after the funeral mass in the St. George fellowship hall. A private grave side service will be held at a later date.
