Macile Wilson Taylor

Macile Wilson Taylor, 95, passed away in the early morning of January 1, 2022, at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. Born on October 22, 1926 to Edgar Lee Wilson and Amanda Stone Wilson, Macile is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Herman Lee Taylor; her son-in-law, Ronald McCurry; grandson, Matthew McCurry; and sisters, Edna Watts Wilson, Mary Lou Pilcher, and Ann Cochran. She is survived by her children, Pamela McCurry; Pat Bowman (Ricky); and grandchildren, Josh McCurry (Kim); Andrea McCurry; Miranda Bowman and brother, Edward Wilson. Growing up, Macile had a true passion for sports. Her stories of the "good old days," entertained the hearts of family and friends. When she was 14, Macile helped her team at Fairmount High to win the state title. That same year, she went on to make the All-Star team, regularly scoring most of the total game points. Macile earned a full athletic scholarship to Piedmont College, but, unable to afford the traveling expenses to attend, she went on to work at Southern Bell Telephone Company. While there, Macile received an offer to try out for the semi-professional basketball team, the Atlanta Blues. She described her career with the Blues as some of the most exciting, rewarding times of her life, surrounded by great teammates, and traveling all over the United States competitively. A highlight of her stellar career was winning a national championship on a chartered trip to St. Joseph, Missouri. Her team was later inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in Knoxville, Tennessee. The funeral service celebrating Macile's life is on Wednesday, January 5, 2022, at 11:00 AM at East Newnan Baptist Church, 14 Pearl Springs Trail, in Newnan, with Rev. Frank Powers and Rev. Greg Dixon officiating. Burial will follow the service at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Newnan. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at McKoon Funeral Home, 38 Jackson Street, in Newnan.
