Phyllis Jean Ponder

Phyllis Jean Runner Ponder, age 71, of Sharpsburg, Ga passed away at her residence August 29, 2008. She is survived by her daughter, Kim Danielle Ponder, Kim’s father, Daniel Robert Ponder both of Newnan, sister, Mary Lynn Fuchs of Canton, Ohio and several nieces and nephews throughout the United States. She was preceded in death by her father, Creed Runner, mother, Sylvia Inez Runner, brother, Drew “June” Runner and sister, Donna Leah Runner Fuchs. Phyllis was born in Montrose, West Virginia and moved to Canton, Ohio as a child attending Timken Vocational High School and then on to Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. Phyllis was involved in extracurricular activities throughout her high school years which reflected a passion for English and Literary studies. Some of these included, Editor of the school newspaper as well as participating on the yearbook staff. After graduation from high school in 1955, Phyllis went on to pursue her degree in English and Journalism studies. The world of Aviation, however, drew Phyllis and she subsequently left school to work for Eastern Airlines, first in Miami, Florida and then Atlanta, GA. While at Eastern, Phyllis worked in different capacities. She particularly enjoyed working as a Stewardess and then as a supervisor in In-Flight service crew Management/ Scheduling. It was in crew management that Phyllis spent many memorable years. After leaving Eastern due to her department being moved to Miami operations, Phyllis went to work for Sprint communications, where she had many equally memorable years. Throughout her life time, Phyllis loved to read, listen to music, helping others and cooking. She had a passion for gardening which she gained from her Mother. In her working years, she was instrumental in successful campaigns of both the United Way and the March of Dimes. When Phyllis completely retired from the employment world, she continued being active in her church, Riverdale Presbyterian as well as Bible study groups and the Red Hats Society. Recently, Phyllis had started to work for the American Kidney Service, calling perspective donors, seeking donations Phyllis was vivacious in spirit and enjoyed life immensely. She knew and loved so many and was rewarded with the same. While it would take volumes to describe her life experiences and beauty, perhaps the best way can be summed up in two words, “She Lived”. The family of Phyllis wishes to express their heartfelt love and appreciation to all for calls, cards and visits. It has meant so much to know how loved Phyllis was by so many. Thank You!
