Richard Herrin Sewell, Sr.

Richard Herrin Sewell, Sr., 87, of Newnan, GA, passed away on Saturday, August 31, 2024. Born on August 31, 1937 in Newnan, he was the third of four sons born to Glover & Hazel Herrin Sewell. In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine Boyd Sewell; his brothers, Glover Sewell, Jr. & Jody Sewell; and his sister-in-law, Merelyn Holbrook. Richard is survived by his brother, Tommy Sewell; his sons, Rick (Jackie) Sewell and Chris (Niki) Sewell; his grandchildren, Justin Sewell, Dylan Sewell, Madison (Jeff) Coleman, and Trey (Hannah) Wood; his great-grandchildren, Tyisen Coleman, Cameron Horton, Ryleigh Wood, and Riggs Coleman; and many nieces & nephews. He is also survived by his brothers-in-law, Jerry (Inelle) Boyd, Brad (Pam) Boyd, Randy (Becky) Boyd; and his sisters-in-law, Edna Sewell and June Eiland. After High School, Richard proudly served in the United States Navy during the late 1950's where he served on the Aircraft Carrier USS Saratoga CVA-60 and finished his service as a Naval Reservist. After the Navy he started his career at Sears & Roebuck and married his lifelong love, Josephine Boyd. While living in Atlanta, the two were very active in the local Jaycees Civic Group. They enjoyed camping, fishing, and water skiing with many of their friends and family. Richard and Josephine started a family and moved to Fairburn, where Richard was an active member of the local Masonic Lodge. Richard and Josephine started Sewell Marine, Inc., in the old railroad depot in Fairburn in 1976. They moved to Newnan in 1986, where Sewell Marine currently remains a family-owned business. Richard will be fondly remembered for his ability to fix anything, for being a hard worker, and for his love of the water & fishing. Funeral services will be held Friday, September 6, 2024 at 2:00 pm in the chapel of McKoon Funeral Home & Crematory with Rev. Kevin Couch and Rev. Randy Boyd officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday, September 6, 2024 from 12 - 2 pm at McKoon Funeral Home & Crematory, 38 Jackson St., Newnan, GA.
