Robert "Bob" Martin Nielsen

Bob Nielsen passed away peacefully at his home in Newnan, Georgia with his loving wife Becky at his side and is now in the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He was born in Chicago, Illinois and was the oldest of Carl and Josephine Nielsen's four children. Bob grew up in Wheaton, Illinois where he relished learning, was active in Boy Scouts, ran track and was proud to play center for the high school's Varsity football team. His summers were spent in Indiana learning how to repair clocks and watches from his grandpa and helping his uncle with his fish and fries restaurant. He had fond memories of peeling 50-pound bags of potatoes on the porch with his grandma. Bob enjoyed the outdoors including camping, sailing, scuba diving (where he became an instructor) and most of all, horseback riding. He learned to ride with his oldest daughter and later had horses in Newnan, where his youngest daughter rode as well. He and Becky loved riding with their family and traveled to horse shows all over the country learning the art of Natural Horsemanship. His lifelong passion was fixing things, and he could always be found working on cars, tractors, big and small equipment, electrical devices and anything else needed by others. He loved fast cars and motorcycles. Bob worked as a typesetter and a draftsman before graduating from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1968 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. His career included designing and manufacturing substation and transmission disconnect switches for a company in Chicago where he rose to President. Bob and his family moved to St. Louis and then to Atlanta when the company's ownership changed. He and his business partner eventually bought the manufacturing business, SERRMI Products, Inc. where Bob was President until he retired several years ago. Bob was a member of First Baptist Church of Atlanta where his faith grew under the teachings of Dr. Charles Stanley and Dr. Anthony George. He and Becky were active in Sunday School and faithful about sitting on the front row every Sunday. Bob loved studying God's Word and sharing his faith with anyone who would listen. One of the highlights of their marriage was traveling to Israel with their church. Bob is survived by his wife of 22 years, Becky Nielsen and his three daughters, Barbara Nielsen (Bill), Deborah Nielsen, Christin Nielsen, their six children, his brother Bill Nielsen and many nieces and nephews. He was blessed to be loved by Becky's two daughters, Paige Perdue (Tom) and Wendi Whitehead (Tim) and their children and grandchildren. A special thanks to those who lovingly took care of Bob during the past several years - Robyn, Janice, Katie, Cassandra, Caleb and his hospice nurse, Millie. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, August 25, 2024 at 4:00 p.m. at McKoon Funeral Home & Crematory, 38 Jackson St., Newnan. The family will greet friends following the service.
