Thomas Raymond Pettet

Dr. Thomas Raymond Pettet, age 81, of Newnan, died November 5, 2007 at his residence. Dr. Pettet was born in Portersville, Ohio on August 1, 1926 and was the son of the late Ray Morrison and Ruth Hammond Pettet. He was drafted into the military in 1945 at the age of 18. He served in the Army as part of the replacement troops for the Battle of Luzon in the Philippines and stayed for 2 years as part of the occupying forces of the third Division after the atomic bombing of Japan. He later joined the Marine Corps Reserve to avoid the draft for Korea, but eventually did serve on medical cruises during the conflict. Following the war he attended Berry College in Rome and obtained his BS degree and later went on to Southern College of Optometry. He did his internship in Rome, Georgia. In 1965 he established his own practice in Newnan and continued this for the next 42 years until his health issues intervened recently. Dr. Pettet was active in professional organizations relating to his profession and took pride in his involvement in the Georgia Optometry Association. His community interests included the Kiwanis Club of Newnan. He was an active part of the ministries of Newnan Presbyterian Church and for many years sang in the church choir, had served as an elder and as a Sunday School teacher. Surviving Dr. Pettet is his wife, Joy Bryan Pettet of Newnan; sons, Thomas Bryan Pettet and his wife Sheryl of Marietta, and Richard Lee Pettet and his wife Kelly of Newnan. Dr. Pettet was most proud of his grandchildren, Katie Pettet, Mallory Pettet and Thomas Owen Pettet. Also surviving is his sister, Floy Jean Scatterday of Ohio. Funeral arrangements are by McKoon Funeral Home at 38 Jackson Street in Newnan where the family will receive friends on Wednesday evening November 7, 2007 between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM. The funeral service will be on Thursday,11:00 AM, November 8, 2007 at Newnan Presbyterian Church. Dr. Harry Barrow will officiate. Interment is at Oak Hill Cemetery in Newnan.
