William "Bill" Edward Doherty

William Edward Doherty, Jr., known to friends and family as Bill, age 84, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 24, 2023. He was born on March 8, 1939 to the late William E. Doherty, Sr. and Clare Marie Shearn Doherty previously of Carrollton, GA. The Doherty family relocated to the Atlanta area when Bill was two years old. Following elementary school Bill attended Sylvan Hills High School where he was a multi-sports athlete and a standout two year letterman on the varsity basketball team. He attended Georgia State University where he was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity and was a starting player on the basketball team. Bill spent much of his career in the airline industry and later with the Clayton County School District. He was an avid sports fan and truly loved watching and attending NASCAR races. In earlier times he was also an avid golfer. If he wasn't watching sports you could find him in the kitchen cooking, or on the patio grilling steaks and was always trying new recipes. The truelove of his life was the cheerleader he met in the 10th grade. He and Carole had a love affair that spanned more than 70 years. Bill was a true family man and absolutely loved spending time with Carole and their sons Robert and Mark. He was fun loving, friendly to all, with an outgoing and gregarious personality. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Bill is survived by his wife, Carole Ann Day Doherty; sons, Robert Edward Doherty, Mark Patrick Doherty (Kristi) of Newnan; grandchildren, John Teague, James Teague, Victoria Teague; Sister, Kathleen "Cathi" Doherty of Athens and brother Peter "Pete" Doherty (Kathleen) of Isle of Palms, SC. Bill was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Elizabeth "Ginger" Doherty Stover. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and extended family in the U. S., Ireland, England and Australia. The memorial service celebrating Bill's life will be held Saturday, June 3, 2023, at 2:00 PM in the chapel of McKoon Funeral Home, 38 Jackson Street, in Newnan, GA with Rev. Don Daly officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM at the funeral home and proceed to the memorial service.
