George "Allen" Thompson

George '"Allen" Thompson Sr., age 78, of Senoia, Georgia, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours Monday, June 24, 2024 with his family by his side. Allen, as he was called by family and friends, was born on Sunday, November 4, 1945, to the late George Walter Thompson and Evelyn Rowe Thompson of Haralson, Ga in the house across the street from his current home of 54 years. Allen was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a lover of all things involving aviation. As a small boy, he dreamed of being a pilot and working on airplanes. After High School graduation, he attended A&P Mechanic school at South GA Tech in Americas, Georgia and began working for Delta AIrlines as a line mechanic in December of 1965 and retired in 1998 after 33 years of service. At the end of his mechanic career at Delta Airlines he was chosen to work in the Delta Flight Museum where he was a vital mechanic on the restoration of the Travel Air and DC-3, which are still key displays in the Delta Flight Museum. His passion was restoring antique aircraft, including 2 Stearman biplanes, a Cessna 170, Cessna 140, Piper J3 Cub, a Starduster 2, and a Luscombe, at his home with his wife and close friends. He became a mentor to many younger aviation enthusiasts where he was appreciated for his advice and knowledge. Allen also loved to garden. Each year he carried on the family tradition of saving and planting the seeds and growing a family heirloom tomato named "Uncle Royal" grown by his father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He shared his seedlings with family and friends with pride. The celebration of Allen's life is Saturday, June 29, 2024, at 11:00 AM in the sanctuary of Mt. Pilgram Lutheran Church, in Haralson. Allen will be laid to rest in the church cemetery following the service. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at McKoon Fuenral Home, 38 Jackson Street, in Newnan. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.mckoon.com. Allen is survived by his wife of 58 years: Berenda White Thompson; children, Tammy Rabern (Roxanne), Patricia Burnette (Jim), George Allen Thompson Jr. (Alex); grandchildren; Adam Rabern, Ryan Rabern, Tyler Burnette and Austin Burnette; siblings; Shirley Sherrer, Janice Peace (Herman), Jerry Thompson (Virginia) and many others, including close family friends, cousins, nieces and nephews.
