LTC (Ret) George Donald Waters

LTC (Ret) George Donald Waters, 93, passed peacefully at home with family by his side on Saturday morning, January 25, 2025. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Barbara McNair Waters, his daughter, Beth (Waters) Moody and husband Hank, his daughter-in-law, Regina Burt Waters (wife of his deceased son, Lee Ashton Waters), six grandchildren, Samuel Ashton Waters, Henry Matthew Moody, Georgiana (Moody) Massad, Robert James Waters, Savannah (Moody) Cobb, Callie Elizabeth Waters, and eight great grandchildren. He was born to the late George Clifford Waters and Elizabeth Brown Waters on September 9, 1931, in Sylvania, Georgia, and is preceded in death by two younger brothers, Russell Ashton Waters and Robert Lee Waters. After graduating from Screven County High School in 1948, he received an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. Following graduation in 1953, he attended Infantry Basic School, Jump School and Ranger School before heading to Germany for his first duty station. George then returned to the US and married Barbara McNair, of Sylvania, Georgia, on July 16, 1955. From there he and Barbara moved to Ft Ord in Monterrey, California. He then transferred to the Corps of Engineers in 1959 for the rest of his career where he served in Korea, Vietnam and as a Battalion Commander in Germany. During their time in California, George and Barbara welcomed their son, Lee. George also served two academic tours at West Point. On his first tour in 1965, he was a tactical officer. His daughter Beth was born during this time. His second tour was from '74 - 78 doing institutional research. In the summer of 1978, George moved his family to Marietta, Georgia. Following his retirement from the Army in 1980, he worked as an airport construction consultant and finished his career in quality control at Lockheed in Marietta, Georgia. While living in Marietta, George and Barbara were active members of Eastside Baptist Church and served as leaders for the college group in the early 80's. They both had a passion for seeing young people grow in their faith. In 1994, George and Barbara moved to Newnan, Georgia to be closer to family. They built a home in the White Oak golf community and resided there for the last 30 years and were members of Sonrise Baptist Church. George treasured his time in the military and the many lifelong friends he and Barbara made along the way. He was an avid reader, a music lover, enjoyed cool cars and was a sports enthusiast, playing numerous sports in school and always enjoyed a good round of golf. Above all else, George will be fondly remembered as a man who was madly in love with his bride, Barbara, and a quiet man of faith who dearly loved his family. He cherished being involved in their lives and participating in their activities and was often seen as a father figure by many of his children's and grandchildren's friends. He was loved and admired by so many. He will be greatly missed. A Celebration of Life for George will be on Sunday, March 9, 2025 from 3:00 PM until 5:00 PM at White Oak Clubhouse, 141 Clubview Drive Newnan, GA 30265.
