Norma Chapman Haynes

Norma Louise Chapman Haynes, age 87, died on Monday, March 10, 2025. Norma was born in Newnan, Georgia to the late Ruby Morrison Chapman and James Henry Chapman. She was married to John Thomas Haynes, Jr. on April 24, 1960, and they were married for over 50 years until his death on October 17, 2010. A lifetime native of Newnan, Norma attended the public schools, graduating from Newnan High School in 1955. She attended LaGrange College and worked at The William L. Bonnell company until 1963. Her devotion to her parents during their long illnesses and her loving care of her husband during his ten-year-long illness will always be remembered. Her faith in God and her deep love for her family and friends were always first in her life. She was a devoted member of the Central Baptist Church, where she served as both an adult and youth Sunday School teacher. She was also a member of the choir for years. Early in life, Norma began volunteering in various church and civic activities and during the 1980s, she served as Coweta County's first female bailiff. There, she connected with those public safety agencies, and because of her compassion and concern for them, she established an annual Public Safety Appreciation Lunch and the Newnan Coweta Public Safety Foundation, which aids those who are in hard times. She loved all who served in any public safety capacity and did what she could for them. Norma's many services to the community included serving on the Coweta Community Foundation Board, the Newnan Country Club Board, the Newnan Public Library board, and the Newnan Coweta Public Library Board. She was secretary of the Sesquicentennial Celebration for the City of Newnan, past president of the Newnan Country Club Ladies Golf Association, a member of the Newnan Playmakers and recipient of the Best Actress Award for three years, was President of the Newnan Coweta Bulldog Club for many years and helped organize the team stopover in Newnan for the Auburn games. In 2016, she was honored at the UGA game as that year's Ole' Faithful Dawg. She served as an officer of the Coweta Community Chest and the United Way, District Heart Fund chairperson for three years; was a volunteer with Main Street Newnan and organizer and participant of "Support our Soldiers" project. She was the organizer of the local celebration for the 1996 Olympic Torch Relay program, was on the county committee for the 100th Birthday celebration of the Coweta County Courthouse and later served on the Restoration Committee for the Courthouse. She served on the 175th Anniversary of the City of Newnan Committee; was past chairperson of the Coweta County Greenspace Committee; was an active member of the Newnan Coweta Chamber of Commerce for over 30 years; served as a volunteer for the Nixon Centre of Performing and Visual Arts; received the 2005 Meritorious Award from the Georgia Sheriff's Association; served on the Piedmont Newnan Hospital Advisory Committee. Norma served on the Carnegie Building Renovation Advisory Committee; served on the Vision 2020 Public Safety Committee; past officer of the Newnan Coweta Historical Society. She was a Grand Marshal for the 2008 Newnan Coweta Historical Society. She was Grand Marshal for the 2008 Newnan Fourth of July parade and served on the Newnan Tree Commission and the Newnan Christmas Decorations Authority Board. She served as President of the Coweta Convention and Visitors Board of Directors until it was dissolved. She was on the Board of the Newnan Centre. From its opening in 2011, Norma was an active volunteer for the Coweta Samaritan Clinic. In 2016, Norma was awarded the Golden Eagle Award given by the Flint River Council of the Boy Scouts of America and she was named Coweta County Community Foundation Woman of the Year. In 2017, she was awarded City of Newnan Volunteer of the Year. She was named 2022 Citizen of the Year and was an Honoree for Legacy on How to Serve by the Leading Age of Georgia. Her love for the public safety employees of Coweta County resulted in organizing a Public Safety Appreciation Luncheon annually which began in 2000 and establishing the Newnan Coweta Public Safety Foundation which aids those who serve during difficult times in their lives. She became known as the "Mother" of Public Safety as she called them all "her children." In 2015, Norma published her book, "Home is Where My Heart Is" which told of her memories of the town of Newnan in which she lived and loved all her life. Surviving are her daughter, Elizabeth Haynes Homer (Jack) of Newnan, her sister, Lynda (Roger) Moister of Atlanta, her nephews, Preston Chapman Moister (Kendall) and Taylor Corbin Moister (Sarah) and her great-nephews, Porter, Max, Corbin and great-nieces, Margaret and Rollins Moister. The memorial service is 2 pm Thursday, March 20, 2025 at Central Baptist Church in Newnan. Following the service, the family will greet friends in the fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, Norma has requested donations be made to The Newnan Coweta Public Safety Foundation, Coweta Samaritan Clinic, The Newnan Coweta Humane Society or Central Baptist Church Building Fund.
